College Counseling

College CounselingAs a college preparatory school, Blair focuses on preparing students in every way for their college career ahead. A crucial step in this process is determining which college is best for each student. The opportunity to assist in this discovery, definition and planning is the role of the College Counseling Office. Blair encourages parents and students to embark upon the college search early and realistically through a program that begins in the ninth grade. Midway through the junior year, students will begin a series of regular meetings with an individual counselor as they narrow their college list through involved, committed research and realistic self-assessment. The College Counseling Office requires five such conferences to ensure that both counselor and student gain a thorough understanding of the student’s strengths and the issues he or she will face in the college admissions process. Most students schedule between six and eight meetings and regularly drop in for more informal meetings.

The College Counseling Office seeks to make the actual application process as thorough and efficient as possible while presenting each applicant in the most fair and positive light. Their letters of recommendation provide enthusiastic insight into the students Blair knows well.

The college selection process is truly an education in itself, and the students who take the process most seriously are those who get the most out of it. Given the thorough and extensive nature of the college counseling effort and the exceptional preparatory curriculum, it should come as no surprise that Blair graduates do very well both in getting accepted and in making the most of their college years.
