Curriculum

Science Department

The science department offers a myriad of courses for students of every ability and interest level. In all cases, the science faculty encourage students to become critical thinkers and to learn to read, understand and evaluate basic scientific material presented in the classroom and news media. Blair science classes focus on laboratory and field work, with the goal of enhancing students’ learning experiences, fostering excitement for the subject matter, and reinforcing their understanding of complex scientific topics. We feel that students should understand the basic techniques and processes for gathering and analyzing evidence to support common scientific theories.

In addition, it is our hope that students will develop strong interest in and genuine enthusiasm for applying their scientific knowledge to the everyday phenomena the world around them. In the past five years, Blair has added two additional courses to the science department: marine biology and biotechnology. These courses have been transformed from semester courses to full-year courses as a result of increased student interest. The average class size in the science department is 11 students. The department has eight full-time faculty members (two of whom hold a doctorate) with an average teaching experience of 16 years. The department is led by a veteran Blair educator with 30 years of teaching experience.
