Faculty
Blair teachers are deeply dedicated to the 400 young adults that make up the student body. Not only their careers, but their entire lives revolve around helping students make successes of themselves.
The challenges students face in the classrooms are the result of a diverse and highly qualified faculty committed to providing the individual attention so critical to every students academic development. Blair faculty members love what they teach as much as they love teaching itself. Encouraging students to excel in a particular area is what motivates every faculty member at Blair. Teachers are exceptionally talented with diverse and outstanding educational backgrounds (36 teachers have advanced degrees) and a wide range of interests. Two teachers in the Art Department are practicing artists, and another in the History Department travels with students to Europe or Russia to witness firsthand the areas they are studying. One particular Asian Studies teacher, a bonsai expert who studied in Japan, invites his students to an authentic Japanese dinner in his home each year.
The faculty at Blair have a role far beyond the classroom. In the dining room, on the playing fields and in the dorms, teachers are a large part of every students life. Caring and committed, they are coaches, housemasters, advisors and friends. Most faculty members and their families live on campus and in doing so, are remarkably accessible, living their lives and sharing their families with the students.
Faculty members guide each student in absorbing, analyzing, evaluating and arriving at individual, sensible decisions. This is achieved through continuing guidance and close faculty support. At Blair, teachers do not hold the hand of each student. Rather they provide a constant, positive presence as friends who are close enough to see and encourage a hidden strength or identify a potential problem before it develops. Blair faculty members set high expectations for each student, assist each student in achieving his or her own potential, and support each student with a network of personal attention. They lay the foundation of confidence and independence that students need to face the challenges of life at Blair and beyond.
The key to the success of our students is the comprehensive attention they receive from a family of faculty, advisors, staff and administrators at Blair. Students leave Blair Academy with a strong sense of personal character, integrity and self-discipline, well prepared to succeed in college and beyond. The often difficult transition to boarding school is eased by a support system of faculty and students who welcome each student into the Blair family. Housemasters and student prefects are approachable as friends and counselors in daily residential life. Faculty members help bridge the gap between parents and the school, encouraging parents to become involved in the Blair experience as well.
