Lady Bucs at Top of Their Game

  To Prospective Blair Basketball Players,

What a great time to be a Buccaneer! A brand-new athletic facility, shiny basketball courts and spacious weight room, combined with an administration committed to the continued progress of female athletics, make NOW the time to join in at the ground floor of a special program. Blair Basketball believes that a culture of hard work, individual improvement and a straight-up, “no nonsense” team communication policy are at the core of who we are as a team.

In practice, we work on our game every day. We spend a good amount of time in the beginning of practice working on individual skills: individual moves, shooting form, ball handling, 2v2 play, pick and rolls, shooting reps, moves in the post (good for everybody, not just post players!). We believe that great players make great teams, and each athlete should take care to see that her own game is functioning at the highest possible level. This is a responsibility to herself, as well as to her teammates. Having played at Columbia University and professionally in Ireland and Germany, I believe strongly that a strong foundation of skills and conditioning are what best prepare athletes for success at each level of play.

“Nothing will work unless you do.”
– John Wooden

Individual improvement is empowering for young women, and we believe that it is worth the effort, for these athletes excel at basketball. It is not selfish to work on individual skills – it’s what makes the game fun and progressive. And, it helps win games.

Then, we work together as a team. We get great at defense, we press, we run, we trap, we set enthusiastic screens, we grab rebounds, we pass the ball with energy, and we love what we do. We take pride in never getting tired, in diving for loose balls, in constant talk on the floor. We don’t let any issues in the gym go unnoticed; we make sure any and all conflicts are resolved out in the open. We focus on work ethic and straightforward communication together, as these are the pillars of our identity as a team.

If this sounds like a refreshing place to play and learn the game of basketball, please contact us. Our girls never give in. We do not take the easy way out in practice. We are role models in our community, we work hard in school, and we act with personality and pride wherever we go. We will not budge from these expectations, so only contact us if you are ready to rise to these challenges.

I look forward to hearing from you!
Go Bucs!
