Thank you for your interest in the Blair Academy Field Hockey program, and welcome to our Web page. The field hockey team plays in two highly competitive leagues, the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) and the New Jersey Prep ‘A’ Division. The 2006 season was my seventh as head coach. My goal is to instill confidence in each player that I coach. Self-reliability and a sense of self-worth help players to understand and live up to their capabilities. Confidence allows athletes to be decisive in critical situations, and it builds team unity by providing the means for communication. I strongly believe team building begins with the individual.
The field hockey team concluded the 2006 season with a record of 11-6. Six seniors provided excellent leadership this year, three of whom received recognition in the MAPL league: Sarah Marcincin, Jena Pinkard and Khia White. Sarah Marcincin was also a NJ Prep “A” first team selection for the third year consecutive year. We aimed high for the 2006 season, knowing that the competition in both leagues would be fierce. We went to the quarter finals of the New Jersey Prep “A” state tournament and suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to our rival, the Peddie School. Blair rallied back, however, with a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Peddie on “Peddie Day.” This win placed us second (tied with The Hill School) in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League. In addition to competing in the New Jersey Prep League and the MAPL League, we also play a variety of local high schools, including teams from the Sussex County Interscholastic League. The team prides itself on good sportsmanship and intense play. Many of our players have gone on to compete at the college level at schools such as Northwestern, Colgate, University of Rochester, Kenyon, and William Smith.
A team is successful when each member of the group is willing to see beyond the boundaries of possibility and aim further. It is a phenomenon when individuals accomplish something they thought was beyond their capabilities. This sort of achievement is attained through hard work, commitment, belief in self and belief in others.
Thank you again for your interest in the program. If you have any questions, please contact me: ernem@blair.edu.

Marcincin Signs Letter of Intent to Northwestern
Sarah Marcincin ’07, pictured with head field hockey coach Melissa Erne ’96 and Headmaster Chan Hardwick, signed a letter of intent in February to attend Northwestern University.
Erne said, “Sarah has made a tremendous impact on the Blair field hockey team over the course of the last four years. A four-time letter winner, Sarah was also a three-time Mid-Atlantic Prep League All Star and a three-time New Jersey Prep “A” first team selection. As captain of the 2006 team, Sarah recorded 24 goals and 14 assists. She was also the recipient of the 2006 Blair Academy Field Hockey Prize. In addition to her stellar field hockey career, Sarah has also made her mark on the lacrosse field. She captained the 2006 team as a junior and was the winner of the 2006 Blair Academy Lacrosse Prize. Sarah will continue her field hockey career at Northwestern University.”
