PREP FOOTBALL 2009 SEASON IN REVIEW
Player
of the year: Dillon Romain made sure that his debut in a
Blair uniform would be memorable.
The post-graduate from Don
Bosco Prep returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score on his
first touch in his first game for the Warren County school.
And before the whistle blew on the 30-7 victory over Western
Reserve of Ohio, Romain had piled up 331 all-purpose yards
and reached the end zone three times.
"He's just outstanding," coach
Jim Stone said. "What
he did this year is even more impressive than what he did
last year because we had such a young line."
The 5-11,
200-pound running back finished the season with 1,104 rushing
yards and 13 touchdowns on 181 carries, and was just as
impressive defensively. Romain rotated between safety, cornerback
and outside linebacker to collect 57 tackles, including eight
for a loss, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
"We
put him where we felt we needed to have the most help on
defense that week," said Stone, who saw his lineup
shrink significantly due to injuries throughout the season. "He's
a football player and did whatever we needed him to do."
Against
Lawrenceville on Oct. 24, Romain was forced to carry the
ball 38 times after Blair's third-string quarterback joined
the first- and second-stringer on the injured list.
"We ran a lot of wildcat that game. The other team knew
what was coming and Dillon still ran for over 200 yards," Stone
said. Romain scored Blair's lone touchdown, a 37-yard rush
in the fourth quarter, in the 12-10 loss.
Romain's performance
this season follows a senior campaign at Don Bosco Prep
where he rushed for 1,436 yards and 26 touchdowns before being
named Gatorade Player of the Year and Most Valuable player
of the New Jersey vs. Northeast All-Star Classic. His college
picture is still undecided.
