2011 Girls Tennis Recaps
11/12 - Blair 1 - Peddie 6
The Lady Bucs traveled to Peddie on Saturday for a tough, final match of the season. The match opened with a tight round of doubles, just falling short to give Peddie an early lead. This was followed by a round of close singles matches across the board. Paige Bykowsky secured her first set quickly at #5 singles, but fell short in a tie break for the third set. Likewise, Sam Ellsworth opened her match with a first set win at #6 singles, but fell short 2 points in a tie break for the third set. Torera Fagbenle earned a solid victory for the team at #3 singles, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2. Maria Cano battled at #4 singles with another three set match, also dropping the match by just three points in the tie break. The Bucs end the season with a 9-6 record.
11/2 - Blair 1 - Hill 5
The Lady Bucs traveled to the Hill School on Wednesday for their second to last match of the season. The match opened with six tough singles matches. Torera Fagbenle earned the team's only win, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-2 at #3 singles. Maria Cano lost a tight match at #4 singles in the tiebreaker for the third set. Due to weather conditions, the doubles teams did not get the chance to compete. Blair will travel to Peddie on November 12th for the final match of the season.
10/25 - Blair 4 - Kittatinny 1
The Lady Bucs hosted Kittatinny on Tuesday for their final home match of the season. Deanna Inez secured the team's first point at #2 singles with a decisive win. Shortly after, Torera Fagbenle stumped her opponent 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles. Ellsworth/Hitchner earned another victory at #1 doubles, as did Annie Kimmelman and Maria Cano at #2 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-4. Sam Beck dropped a tough match at #1 singles 7-5, 3-6, 8-10 (tiebreak). The Bucs will travel to Hill on Saturday.
10/22 - Blair 0 - Lawrenceville 7
Blair hosted Lawrenceville on Saturday. The Bucs opened with three very strong, hard-fought doubles matches. Fagbenle/Cano put up a strong fight at #2 doubles, only falling 8-5. Everyone played great singles matches, despite the score. Fagbenle started off strong at #3 singles, winning the first set 6-2. She just fell short, however, dropping 10-7 in a super-tiebreaker for the third set. The Bucs will host Kittatiny at 4:00 on Tuesday.
10/17 - Blair 1 - Sparta 4
The Lady Bucs hosted Sparta on Monday. After several tough matches, the Bucs dropped the match 4-1. Cano/Bykowsky had a tough three-setter at #1 doubles. After dropping the first set 6-2, they came back and won the second set 6-1; the third set came down to a tie-breaker, which they lost 7-3. Hitchner/Ellsworth also had a close match at #2 doubles. After winning the first set and dropping the second, they lost a close third set 6-4. Fagbenle earned the Bucs one win at #3 singles, defeating her opponent 6-2, 7-5. Blair will host Gill at home on Thursday.
10/15 - Blair 5 - Hun 2
On Saturday, the Lady Bucs travelled to Princeton to face the Hun School. Blair started off strong, sweeping all three doubles matches. Beck/Inez won 8-5 at #1 doubles, Fagbenle/Cano won 8-1 at #2 doubles, and Hitchner/Ellsworth won 8-5 at #3 doubles. Fagbenle secured a the team's first singles victory at #3 singles with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win. Shortly after, Cano defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at #4 singles. Inez recorded a win at #2 singles (6-4, 6-2), as did Bykowsky at #5 singles (6-1, 6-4).
10/10 - Blair Wallkill Valley
The Lady Bucs hosted Walkill on Monday afternoon, improving their record to 6-2. Blair recorded wins on each court, from #1 singles through #2 doubles. Sovann Stark stepped up from JV to partner up with Lauren Hitchner at #2 doubles. Stark and Hitchner earned a solid 6-0, 6-0 win for the team. The girls will travel to Hun this coming Saturday for their second official MAPL match of the season.
10/8 - Blair 6 - Mercersburg 1
On Saturday, the Lady Bucs hosted Mercersburg for their first home MAPL match. The girls got off to a strong start; Torera Fagbenle and Lauren Hitchner won at #2 doubles (8-3), as did Maria Cano and Paige Bykowsky at #3 doubles (8-1). Everyone put up a good fight during the singles matches. Fagbenle continued to shine at #3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Cano, Bykowsky, and Hitchner all secured their first singles wins of the season at #4, #5, and #6 singles, respectively. Blair will host Walkill at 4:00 on Monday.
10/1 - Blair 1 - Lawrenceville 8
Despite ominous weather, the Lady Bucs traveled to Lawrenceville on Saturday. Lauren Hitchner and Sam Ellsworth played hard and came out on top with a 9-7 win at #2 doubles. Everyone fought hard in the singles matches, many playing their first singles match of the season. Torera Fagbenle just fell short at #3 singles, dropping 6-4, 6-2. The Lady Bucs will host their first MAPL conference match on Saturday, October 8 against Mercersburg.
9/30 - Blair 3 - Warren Hills 2
This past Friday, the lady Bucs recorded their fourth win of the season, winning 3-2 over Warren Hills. Sam Beck and Deanna Inez both fought hard at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. Torera Fagbenle defeated her opponent soundly with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Paige Bykowsky and Maria Cano fought hard to secure the first set of their match 7-5, closely followed by a quick 6-0 second set. Lauren Hitchner and Sam Ellsworth continued to prove themselves at #2 doubles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Blair will travel to Lawrenceville on Saturday.
9/27 - Blair 4 - Rutgers Prep 1
The Lady Bucs came back strong after Saturday's rainout. Rutgers Prep came to the Blair tennis courts Tuesday afternoon, where the Bucs came out on top with a 4-1 win. Torera Fagbenle earned another solid victory at #3 singles, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-4. Shortly after, Paige Bykowsky and Maria Cano won decisively at #1 doubles, as did Sam Ellsworth and Lauren Hitchner at #2 doubles. Both Sam Beck and Deanna Inez played hard at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. Inez earned her second win of the season. The Lady Bucs are now 3-1 for the season and will host Warren Hills at their home courts on Friday at 4:00 pm.
9/20 - Newton: Win 5-0
The lady Bucs faced Newton High School in their second home match of the season, coming out on top with a decisive 5-0 victory. Sam Beck dropped only two games at #1 singles, recording a solid 6-1,6-1 win, while Deanna Inez recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles. Torera Fagbenle secured her second win of the season at #3 singles, as did Bykowsky/Cano (#1 doubles) and Ellsworth/Hitchner (#2 doubles). Next up, the Bucs face Peddie at Blair for the first MAPL match of the season.
9/17 - PDS: Win 3-2
Blair secured its first season win against a solid Princeton Day School team this Saturday. Both Sam Beck and Deanna Inez fought hard at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, but fell short to two very strong opponents. Torera Fagbenle earned her first win of the season at #3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-3. Both doubles teams played incredibly well this weekend. Paige Bykowsky and Maria Cano teamed up at #1 doubles, earning an impressive, decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory. Sam Ellsworth and Lauren Hitchner fought for a very nice 6-3, 6-4 win to secure the match. The Bucs face Newton High School at home on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
9/12 - The Lady Bucs fought hard despite a tough loss to Pingry on Monday. At number three singles, Torera Fagbenle played a great match, but just fell short in the second set. Both doubles teams--Paige Bykowsky and Maria Cano at #1 doubles, and Lauren Hitchner and Sam Ellsworth at #2 doubles-- had great matches, Bykowsky and Cano securing a great second set to take their opponents to the third set. Blair will travel to Princeton Day School on Saturday, September 17. |
