Athletes Compete on New Track

Athletes enjoyed the first meet of the spring season on Blair’s new track – part of the ongoing campaign to upgrade the School’s sports facilities, including a new Activity and Athletic Center. Head coach Blair Buck was pleased to note the success of the teams that day: “The new track performed every bit as well as we had hoped. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won against Hun, Gill and Trinity, which was a nice way to break in the track. Visiting coaches, parents and athletes all commented on how nice the facility is.”

Dear Prospective Student/Athlete:

BlairAcademy as an institution strives to educate the whole person. We seek to provide a balance between challenging academics and rich extracurricular experiences. The vast majority of our coaches are teachers, and our students work hard to be successful in the classroom, on the athletic field and within the community. The Blair Track team operates within this context with a spring schedule of ten or more meets ranging from dual meets to large relay meets. We compete in all typical high school running and field events including the pole vault and javelin.

Through the cross country teams in the fall, the Blair Winter Track team and Spring Track, it is possible for one to run competitively all year long. Few students choose to do this, of course, but the truly dedicated athlete has this option. Dr. Marty Miller coaches the Boys’ Cross Country team in the fall and the distance runners in the Spring, while Latta Browse coaches Girls’ Cross Country and is the Head Winter Track Coach. There is, therefore, continuity in the coaching staff from one season to the next.

Our interscholastic athletic league is a very competitive one including Lawrenceville, Peddie, Hill, Mercersurg and Hun. These schools along with numerous other New Jersey private schools provide the bulk of our competition. We have taken a mile relay team to the Penn Relays every year for the past eight years and have also competed in the Hill Relays, the Randolph Relays and the East Coast Relays among others.

While the Boys’ Team has drawn larger numbers of athletes, both teams have produced their share of successes including a qualifier for the Nationals in the girls’ 1500 in 2004 and a boys’ distance medley relay team which qualified for the Penn Relays in 2003. The Boys’ team won the state prep championship in 2002 and the girls’ team has made steady improvement in their competitive position each of the last three years.

In addition to Dr. Miller, the track coaches include sprint and jumps coach, Mike Schloat, and girls’ Head coach, Kyle Mason. I coach the field events and the hurdles. Track is a wonderful way to develop speed, strength, and self discipline, and I invite you to become part of the Blair Track family. We look forward to meeting you and encourage you to contact us when you visit the school. Please feel free to call or email any of the coaching staff.

Best wishes,
Blair Buck
Head Track Coach
