The
1998-99 season was marked by continued success and growth for
Blair wrestling. The college team turned in a .500 record in
dual meets and fared reasonably well in tournament competition
especially considering that they often competed without a heavyweight.
Though this team was, on the whole, relatively less accomplished
than previous years' college teams, they nevertheless managed
to achieve something that few Blair teams of the past have been
able to do. Namely, they defeated the junior varsity squads
from The University of Pennsylvania, the United States Naval
Academy and the United States Miliary Academy in the same year
in dual meet competition. Steven Sakis won a National Prep championship
and Patrick Griffin placed 3rd while Jim Letchford and Brian
Voliva both took 4th place at the Nationals. Overall, the technical
skill level on the team saw unprecedented improvement.
The
high school team though young and immature (as many as 7 freshman
and sophomores were in the line-up for some dual meets) continued
to take on the same challenging schedule that previous year's
teams have faced and continued to succeed as well. They managed
to win the Ironman Tourney at the beginning of the year and
they also knocked off the unanimous number one team in the country,
Bald Eagle Area, in dual meet competition. Part way through
the season the team lost talented senior Marat Tomaev to injury
but continued to excel anyway. Cory Cooperman won his second
National Prep championship and senior Jody Giuricich claimed
his first title as well. Other high school team members who
placed at the Nationals were: Matt Veres 6th, Joseph Crecca
3rd, Michael Carbonaro 2nd, Zack Esposito 4th, and Chris Chaft
2nd.
