Mario Mason Captures Second Junior National Crown

MARK GREY IS A DOUBLE WINNER IN CADET FREESTYLE & GRECO-ROMAN

July 20-26, Fargo, N.D.: While most Blair students were at the beach or poolside, senior Mario Mason and incoming freshman Mark Grey were making history. Mason captured his second Asics/Vaughn Junior National title at 152 lbs. while Mark Grey was a double winner on the cadet level at 98 lbs.

The Minnesota-bound Mason beat some tough competition and capped off his national tournament in dominating fashion by defeating Derek St. John of Iowa
4-0, 4-0. Mason was a three time National prep champion who is looking to continue his winning ways at the University of Minnesota. Evan Silver, national prep champion at 103 lbs. for Blair, placed fifth at 112 lbs in cadet freestyle.

And Mark Grey is setting the tone for the future at Blair. Mark, the brother of Mike --a freshman All-American at Cornell--won both styles on the cadet level. He defeated Tanner Moon of Alabama 2-1, 4-2 for the Greco-Roman title at 98 lbs. and Joe Orecchio of New Jersey 7-0, 1-0 for his freestyle crown. Grey is slotted to wrestle at 103 lbs for the Bucs next year.

“Mario joins some elite company at Blair by winning two consecutive Jr. National titles. He’s well on his way to a great college career,” Jeff Buxton said. “Jesse Shanaman had a great tournament at 160 pounds and missed placing by just one bout. We look for a strong season from him next year. And what can I say about Mark Grey? He’s on track to become a four-time national prep champion here.”

Tony Buxton who was training extremely hard this summer had to pull out with a last minute injury. Buxton is a two-time prep All-American and will look to win his first national title next February. In addition, Chris Villalonga also had to pull out due to an injury.
