Blair Defeats #5 St. Edward of Ohio, #21 McDonough of Maryland and N.J.’s Bergen Catholic in Blair Super Quad
PELTIER GETS THREE PINS ON THE DAY; HANSON GETS A FIVE-SECOND PIN
Blair Academy is mostly a “road team,” meaning they have to travel to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland and other states in order to find teams who will compete against them. This past Saturday, January 26, however, Blair students had the opportunity to watch the #2 team in the nation compete against three schools, two of which are also nationally ranked. The 2008 running of the Blair Super Quad featured #5 St. Edward of Ohio, #21 McDonogh of Maryland and in-state rival Bergen Catholic and it was action-packed.
Gaining pins against McDonogh were 171 pounder Cory Peltier, Evan Silver at 103 lbs., Sean Boyle at 112 lbs., Kyle Hanson at HWT and Joe Stanzione at 125 lbs. Major decisions were registered by Anthony Valles at 130 lbs., Austin Ormsbee at 135 lbs., Mario Mason at 145 lbs., and Steve Hanzlik at 215 lbs. Final score: Blair 52 McDonogh 12.
“We wrestled great against McDonogh as we had some quality matches from Ormsbee, Guzzo, and Hogue and a big pin from Kyle Hanson at HWT,” said Jeff Buxton.
ST. EDWARD:
St. Edward has a rich tradition and good lineage. A lot of Blair athletes who go on to college have St. Edward athletes as teammates so the bragging rights reach further than the Blair-St. Edward wrestling rooms.
Back to the dual.
Adam Hogue gained comeuppance from last year's dual as he registered a major decision at 160 lbs., Mario Mason also came up with a major at 145 lbs., Cory Peltier (171 lbs.) and Kyle Hanson (HWT) came up with big pins for the Bucs. A major highlight came when Tony Buxton (119 lbs.) switched the momentum with a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Ed's athlete John Cobos. Austin Ormsbee wrestled the #1-ranked 130 pounder in the USA, Colin Palmer, and wrestled tough losing 8-3. Final score: Blair 32 St. Edward 18.
“The St. Edward match was a bit different from the McDonogh dual, but St. Edward always wrestles us tough. We lost close bouts at 135 lbs., 140 lbs., 152 lbs., 215lbs., 103 lbs., and 112 lbs., but we were able to get a big momentum swing at 119 lbs. with a 1-0 win from Tony {Buxton}. Chris Villalonga and Anthony Valles came away with big wins and those wins iced the dual for us," Buxton said. "As always St. Edward fought hard and came here to Blairstown to wrestle. It is such a great rivalry and I have tremendous respect for their coaches, athletes (their entire program).”
Blair defeated home-state rival Bergen Catholic by a score of 59-12. Big wins came from John Guzzo, Mario Mason, Cory Peltier, Kyle Hanson, Evan Silver, Sean Boyle and Tony Buxton. Hanson had a five-second pin in the Bergen Catholic dual. (Click here for Blair Super Quad results.)
Next up for the Bucs is the “4 At the Shore” this Saturday February 2 at Long Branch High School.
