Its streak is broken, but a wrestling power stays on top
By E.M. Swift
The absurd winning streak -- six years and 45 tournaments -- had to end sometime, and for Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.), it was the second tournament of the season, the Walsh Ironman, a 53-school competition held in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, that had the wrestlers most concerned. "Everybody's tough [in that one]," says Blair's Kellen Russell, a two-time National Prep champ who wrestles at 130 pounds. "And everybody wants to beat us."

Blair Wrestling Pins Down Hunger
For the third year, Blair wrestlers are raising money for the Community Food Pantry of Blairstown. The team is soliciting per pin pledges from faculty, students, family and local businesses. Each pledge will be multiplied by the total number of pins that the team receives during the National Prep Championships on February 25 and 26, 2005, at Lehigh University. While trying to raise money for the Food Pantry, the team is striving for their 25th consecutive National Prep Championship title. In the past, the wrestling team has collected over $2,500 with their Pin Down Hunger campaign. The Community Food Pantry is a local organization that is composed of four local churches: St. Jude Church, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, The First Presbyterian Church of Blairstown, and the Blairstown United Methodist Church. The Community Food Pantry operates year-round and sees to the needs of the residents of Blairstown and surrounding areas.
For more information, or to make a pledge, please contact Coach Paul Clavel.

Everyone
seemed to have an enjoyable experience, even freshman Kyle Turner
who had a minor wreck and finished his loop around the island
in a bus. Alex Berardi ('04) earned the respect of all with an
amazing top 10 finish among the 30-milers. Ed Gibbons managed
to cross the finish line despite riding for the final six miles
on a bicycle with a broken frame. Brandon Palmer, a postgraduate
from North Carolina, led a group of shirtless teammates across
the finish line wearing only a freestyle singlet (yes, it WAS
cold). Kelsey Strub ('03), Kira Randolph ('03), Joanna Weber ('03),
and Mrs. Fleckman were the only female Buccaneers to make the
trip. Joanna and Kira enjoyed a complimentary massage at the end
of their journey to help them unwind. Coach Buxton learned some
of the finer points of the parking rules in lower Manhattan from
one of NY's finest in blue. And of course, shortly following the
race, Coach Burroughs took a well deserved nap.Special
thanks to Mr. Connors and Mr. Lunger who made the trek into Manhattan
at 4:30 in the morning and provided invaluable mechanical troubleshooting
expertise. Thanks also to Ms. Holly Newcomb, Mr. Browse, Ms. Gorski,
Mr. Wright and to all who lent bicycles or equipment to the cause. To
see a nearly complete roster of all who participated, and/or to
donate to the MS Society, click here.
Our
participation in the event is one of two planned community service
projects that our team will partake in during the 2002-03 school
year. The other event will be our Pin Down Hunger fund
raiser for local charity in Blairstown.Several
people in the Blair community including two on the wrestling team
have family members who have been affected directly by MS. The
following is a description of multiple sclerosis from the New
York chapter of the National MS Society Web site:Multiple
sclerosis is a lifelong and sometimes disabling disease of the
central nervous system that affects nearly a third of a million
Americans. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages
of 20-50, just when they are beginning careers and families. MS
symptoms are highly individual and vary enormously in severity
and duration. They may include at one time or another abnormal
fatigue, impaired vision, loss of balance and muscle coordination,
slurred speech, tremors, stiffness and, in the most severe cases,
partial or complete paralysis.TOP

Info
Buttons
In
an effort to facilitate better communication with parents, a feature
of the Blair Wrestling home page is the Info Button.
If you click above on the menu bar on Schedule and Results
you will be taken to the schedules for the college, prep and high
school teams. You then need to click on the team whose schedule
you are interested in viewing. When you get to the actual schedule
you will notice a column of round buttons under
the title Info to the right of each competition listed.
If you click on one of those buttons (note: not all of the buttons
are active as of this time, but the intention is that they will
be by the beginning of the season), you will be taken to a detailed
itinerary of the team's travel plans for each respective event.
Information such as the time we will depart and the time we will
return is listed along with hotel accommodations and the street
address of the venue of the competition (which you can then use
with MapBlast above to generate a detailed route for you to take
from your home). As
most parents already know, there will DEFINITELY be changes made
to the various itineraries, so check often and double check with
your child if you need exact times or need to confirm any
of the information. We hope that this will be a time-saving tool
and will help everyone to make their planning easier.
