Marcincin Signs Letter of Intent
to Northwestern

February 9, 2007 -- Sarah Marcincin ’07, pictured with head field hockey coach Melissa Erne ’96 and Headmaster Chan Hardwick, signed a letter of intent in February to attend Northwestern University.

Erne said, “Sarah has made a tremendous impact on the Blair field hockey team over the course of the last four years. A four-time letter winner, Sarah was also a three-time Mid-Atlantic Prep League All Star and a three-time New Jersey Prep “A” first team selection. As captain of the 2006 team, Sarah recorded 24 goals and 14 assists. She was also the recipient of the 2006 Blair Academy Field Hockey Prize. In addition to her stellar field hockey career, Sarah has also made her mark on the lacrosse field. She captained the 2006 team as a junior and was the winner of the 2006 Blair Academy Lacrosse Prize. Sarah will continue her field hockey career at Northwestern University.”

Players Sign Letters of Intent to
Division I Schools
Head boys’ basketball coach Joe Mantegna announced that on November 8, three Blair Academy basketball players signed national letters of intent to Division I colleges. Three-year Blair student Julius Coles (Harlem, NY) signed with Canisius College of the MAAC.; two-year Blair student Patrick Hazel (Queens, NY) signed with Marquette University of the Big East; and one-year senior Alexis Wangmene (San Antonio, TX) signed with the University of Texas of the Big 12.

Wrestlers Sign Letters of Intent
November 15, 2006 -- Head wrestling coach Jeff Buxton announced that four Blair Academy wrestlers have signed letters of intent to four different colleges. Alex Cournoyer (133 lbs.) of North Granby, Conn., has signed at Boston University, where he will wrestle for Carl Adams who is Jeff Buxton’s former college coach. Cournoyer is a three-time national prep place winner.

Eric Medina (152 lbs.) of Fairton, N.J., signed at the University of Maryland with Coach Santoro who is also a Blair graduate. Medina, who is ranked third in the country, is a two-time national prep champion, a cadet national champion and a Beast of the East champion.

Jared Platt (215 lbs.) of Randolph, N.J., signed at Penn State. Platt, who is ranked second in the country, is a national prep champion and took second at junior nationals.

Kellen Russell (130 lbs.) of High Bridge, N.J., is ranked number one in the country and signed at Michigan. He is a two-time national prep champion, a Beast of the East champion, a cadet national champion and a junior national champion.

Blair Softball Player Signs Letter of Intent
Christina Giambrone ’06, a four-year day student from Blairstown, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Lafayette College on a softball scholarship. Christina is a three-time All State player and a two-year Captain of the softball team. Christina was also a field hockey captain and lettered in basketball. Coach Conforti-Browse writes, “Christina has been one of the best players I have ever coached or seen in my 19 years of coaching.”

Adrien Achieves 1,000 Points,
Now Aiming for Medical Career
Winnie Adrien ’06 achieved her 1,000th career point in the first quarter of a winning home game (45-40) against Hill on January 25, 2006. A four-year starter, Winnie garnered a total of 1,007 career points by game’s end.

Among the newspaper articles about Winnie’s success is a feature is the January 29 edition of the New Jersey Herald, “In It For The Long Haul” by Stefan Bondy.

Bondy, who described Winnie as “an elite two-sport athlete,” wrote, “Adrien went to Blair for academic opportunities, but her athletic prominence and Division-I scholarship offer were an unexpected bonus…Adrien is getting D-1 offers for basketball, but choosing a college has been tougher than picking a high school. Adrien wants to play soccer and basketball. The only programs offering that are D-III…But Adrien’s priority remains the same as when she chose Blair - academics. More than scoring another 1,000 points, she wants to be a doctor and study sports medicine. It’s a goal she feels was made easier by her decision four years ago. ‘I can’t really see myself without Blair,’ she said. ‘It has had such a positive influence on my life.’”

Kenton Thornton picks North Carolina
Blair Academy’s Kenton Thornton committed to play football for the University of North Carolina on Wednesday February 2nd, by signing the National Letter of Intent. Kenton, a post graduate from Dallas, Texas, was a standout at Split End for Blair and led the MAPL League in receiving. He caught 28 passes for 518 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran back 2 kickoffs and 2 punt returns for touchdowns.

Kenton excelled on the defensive side of the ball as well, where he played the Safety position and recorded 5 interceptions and 59 tackles. For his success, Kenton was named First Team All MAPL Offense and First Team All MAPL Defense. Kenton was also named the New Jersey Prep Offensive Player of the Year.

Blair shortstop picked in the 2004 Major League Draft
Blair Academy’s senior Joe Florio was selected by the Oakland A’s in the 39th round of the 2004 Major League Draft on Tuesday, June 8. Joe spent 3 years at Blair where he had a tremendous career and is now off to play at the University of Virginia. Florio was one of only ten high school players selected in the state of New Jersey.
