Building Blair's Future: The Endowment
Goal: $15 million

Our endowment is an investment in the future, ensuring we can pursue our essential mission in perpetuity. A strong endowment gives us confidence to plan and make strategic long-term decisions on a foundation of financial security. Today, Blair’s endowment stands at $64 million — impressive when you consider it totaled just $12 million in 1988. Yet, the reality is that Blair was a latecomer to endowment-building: This means Blair relies more heavily on tuition to meet everyday needs than do other schools. Ever Always: The Campaign for Blair will strengthen our endowment, ensuring the vital resources that make the Blair experience sustainable for future generations of students and teachers.

Specifically, we seek to increase scholarship aid for students and salary support and academic enrichment for the faculty. In building Blair’s endowment, we invest in the school’s most valuable resources — its students and teachers.

At the age of 89, George Senter is one of Blair’s most enthusiastic alums and loyal class representatives. He graduated from Blair in 1938 and after attending Brown University, began a 36-year teaching career with 31 of those years spent at the Hill School. At Hill, George was a beloved teacher and dorm master, and in 2005 he became the first instructor to have a dormitory, Senter House, named in his honor. One of George’s students said of him, “I believe that George is indeed one of the greatest teachers that I have ever come across in my lifetime — a teacher of mathematics and a teacher of life.”

Because of his passion for teaching and his belief that teachers and students are the lifeblood of a school, George has made known an historic bequest intention that will benefit Blair students and teachers for generations to come. George has asked that half of his future gift be used to establish the George D. Senter Endowed Chair in Mathematics, while the remaining half should be used to create the George D. Senter Scholarship program, which will provide financial assistance to worthy students who could not otherwise afford a Blair education. In making an investment in Blair’s endowment, George’s gift supports the teachers and students who remain at the heart of a Blair education.
