News & Events 2005-2006 Blair Helps Battle Breast Cancer
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a fact that seldom goes unnoticed at Blair. A number of students, faculty and other community members traveled with Ryan and Stacey Spring ’95 to Princeton on October 16 to participate in the Komen New Jersey Race For The Cure, sponsored by The Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate – one of more than 115 affiliates of The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation sharing the mission of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. The national organization was founded by Nancy Brinker in Dallas, Texas, in 1982 to honor the memory of her sister, Susan Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Since then, the Foundation has raised almost $600 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.
Blair’s community service organization, under the guidance of teacher Kaye Evans, collected $2 donations from participants in Lee Jeans’ National Denim Day, October 7. As with Race for the Cure, the money raised will be presented to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to be used specifically by hospitals and clinics in New Jersey. Members of the Blair community, like employees of businesses across the nation, have been contributing to this worthy cause, as they slipped into their favorite jeans for the day and sported a pink ribbon.
School registrar Susan Ferrera, along with her husband Joseph, made her annual trek in support of breast cancer research by participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Parsippany, New Jersey, also on October 16. “We raised $200 from our efforts,” Susan said. “There were thousands of walkers, and it seemed to be a huge success. Great walking weather!”
