News & Events 2005-2006 Students Visit MOMA and Met
Groups of Blair students traveled to New York City recently to visit both the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to Rita Baragona, chair of the fine arts department, those enjoying MOMA as a weekend activity (see photo) included Lin Chien 07, Emily Catalano 07, Dan Kraines 06, Lauren Weinstein 06 and Erik Wilburn 06. Besides visiting the museum, said Rita, we went to a few galleries on 57th Street and then to a fabulous sushi restaurant.
She added, The trip to the Met included students taking classes in art history, painting, drawing and AP Portfolio. We saw the van Gogh drawings and Fra Angelico exhibition, and then my students went the Salander-OReilly Galleries at the invitation of Buzz Newall, father of Anne Newall 06. At one gallery we saw an exhibition of my mentor, Leland Bell, and his wife, Louisa Mathiesdottir. At another gallery on 71st Street, we saw museum-quality old masters ranging from medieval sculptures, tapestries and gargoyles, to early 20th century American landscapes. Names like Goya and Titian were on the walls, available for purchase. It was a real treat, and I thank Mr. Newall.
