Community Members Walk to Fight Breast Cancer
Spanish teacher Sandy Blodgett, former faculty member Amy Vachris, and Blair parent Michelle St. André (Peiwen '10), along with her sister, Joy, participated in the 40-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on October 7 and 8 in New York City. Each of these women was required to raise a minimum of $1,800 in order to join the walk. Funds raised through this event are managed by the Avon Foundation, which is distinguished from most other charities that focus on a particular area of breast cancer by supporting a national network of research, medical, social service and community-based organizations. From 2003-2005, the Avon Walk series, which funds programs in all 50 states, has raised more than $100 million through coast-to-coast events.
Sandy described her experience: “It was unbelievable to finish the walk. We were in so much pain on Saturday, we cannot explain how we walked 14 miles more on Sunday! And the fact that I can walk now without a sore muscle but only a few blisters ... amazing! It must be the inspiration of having met women who struggled with the disease and are blessed to call themselves survivors.” Amy added, “I far surpassed my goal of $1,800 and have raised a little over $2,800! Together with my friend Sandy, we are bringing nearly $6,000 to the Avon Foundation, to be used both for research and for existing programs. I feel great about that!”
Michelle was pleased to add, "My sister and I both raised about $2,900 each. There were 3,500 participants, and together, we raised $9.6 million!"
