Arts and Politics Combined

The first event in the Bartow Series this year was a performance for students only the morning of December 12. The Baltimore Consort presented a holiday program of instrumental music dating back to Shakespeare’s time. From lute to flutes, the instruments were beautifully crafted wooden pieces suited to the selections of carols and lullabies. A male tenor and female soprano added to the fine performance. (View performance photos below.)

Founded in 1980, the group has explored early popular music, focusing on the relationship between folk and art song and dance. Their interest in early music of English/Scottish heritage has also led them to delve into the rich trove of traditional music preserved in North America. Recordings on the Dorian label have earned them recognition as Top Classical-Crossover Artist of the Year (Billboard), as well as rave reviews elsewhere. Besides touring in the U.S. and abroad, they often perform on such syndicated radio broadcasts as St. Paul Sunday, Performance Today, Harmonia and the CBC’s OnStage.

Later that day, Carrie Giddins ’92, deputy communications director for EMILY’s List, Washington, D.C., was the featured Society of Skeptics speaker. Carrie, who holds two master’s degrees in political science and journalism, presented her analysis of the November 2006 election in terms of young voters and the Democratic sweep.

The Society of Skeptics lecture series occurs on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and is held in Cowan Auditorium. Click here for a full listing of scheduled speakers.
