British Sailor Speaks at Skeptics
Robin Davie, one of a very few to sail solo around the world three separate times, spoke again at Blair as part of the Society of Skeptics lecture series on September 26.
He was previously a guest speaker for Skeptics in 2002. A native of Cornwall, England, Davie is one of a small and elite group of sailors who has completed three solo circumnavigations of the globe in the 1990, 1994, and 1998 Around Alone races. In addition to his three solos, Davie has crossed the Atlantic by sail seven times, competing in the 1988 OSTAR to finish second in the 40-foot Class 4 fleet.
At 27,000 miles in length and seven months in duration, Around Alone is the longest race on earth for an individual in any sport, and is among the most grueling, considered to be the Ultimate Challenge.
Davie’s career as a speaker dates back to 1991 when, after completing his first solo around the world yacht race, he began speaking to students who had tracked his progress around the world through the Student Ocean Challenge education program. Since that time, Robin has presented to hundreds of school groups throughout the U.S. and now is a full-time speaker. Posted 9/26/06
