Student Play Set in Ireland
Dancing at Lughnasa, by Brian Friel, will be staged November 5, 6, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wean Theatre of Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts (see photos below). General admission tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. For reservations, please call (908) 362-6121, ext. 5706. Director Philip Crawford, a visiting faculty member who hails from Ireland and teaches in England, reports on the student production: In the town of Ballybeg, County Donegal, the life of the Mundy family is undergoing disturbing change. Father Jack (Griffin Randolph) has recently returned from missionary work as a Catholic priest in Ryanga, Africa, alarmingly impressed and inspired by the pagan traditions he has encountered. The eldest sister, Kate (Taylor McKay) is becoming increasingly anxious about her teaching post in the local school and when Agnes (Cass Gardiner) and Rose (Lotte Lijnzaad) get the news that their work − knitting gloves − has dried up, the integrity of family life seems greatly threatened. Maggie (Emma Small) struggles to maintain morale with her distinctive sense of humor, while the youngest sister, Chris (Carter Ford), has to cope with looking after her young son, Michael, and the infrequent and unpredictable visits of the boy’s father, Gerry Evans (Eric Hedden). The story is told, in retrospect, by the adult Michael (Ryan Class). Posted 10/26/06
