Skeptics Topic: Guantanamo
Keith H. Hodges, an attorney who served 29 years as an Army officer, judge advocate general (JAG) officer and trial judge, was the featured Society of Skeptic speaker on Tuesday, January 29. He addressed the topic, “Guantanamo: Incarceration of Terrorists,” in terms of the following:
- Who are being detained?
- Why are they being detained?
- How long will they be detained?
Hodges noted that the detention of those at Guantanamo is a contentious issue, has involved the Supreme Court several times, and resulted in Congress’ passage of the Military Commissions Act. Notwithstanding the apparent legal basis to detain those at Guantanamo and try them for alleged war crimes, many Americans question whether the detention is consistent with international law and fundamental notions of American justice. His presentation explored these issues.
Hodges has been an instructor in the legal division of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center since 2000. From 2004 through 2006, he served with the Military Commissions as trial clerk and legal advisor to the presiding officers. A full listing of the Skeptics programs is available here.
