“River Sanctuaries & Island Temples,” a painting exhibit by Kenneth Metcalf, is on display in the Romano Gallery now through December 29. Artist’s receptions for students and the public were held the weekend of December 7.

According to Metcalf, landscape painting “keeps him connected to his natural surroundings.” He adds, “Painting enables me to express my personal vision and appreciation for our precious environment. I am inspired by the way light illuminates and transforms the land and water around us. I strive to capture this light through a simple, direct process of painting and drawing with watercolors, pastels and oils. These works are from various local rivers and islands in New Jersey and along the coast of Maine. I find inspiration from these two forms of landscapes in the reflective pattern of light as a focal point. Rivers and islands become a spiritual metaphor for reflection and contemplation.” Through a simple interpretation of common landscape subjects, Metcalf hopes to convey his vision of the peaceful, contemplative nature of rivers and islands. He inspires the viewer to be more appreciative of the sublime beauty, balance and harmony in the ever-changing natural landscape and waterways.

Metcalf is an alumnus of the Rhode Island School of Design and is based in Knowlton, N.J., along the Delaware River. His work appears in private collections and has won various regional awards. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and group exhibitions. Metcalf enjoys hiking and kayaking in the areas he depicts and is an active member in various conservation and environmental organizations. He contributes a percentage of the sales of his work to local conservation efforts.
