State Climatologist Speaks at Skeptics
Dr. David A. Robinson, chairman of the department of geography at Rutgers University and New Jersey’s state climatologist, was the featured Society of Skeptics speaker on April 15. Dr. Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College and a doctorate from Columbia University. Before arriving at Rutgers, Dave was an associate research scientist at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and a visiting scientist at the National Climatic Data Center. He has been state climatologist since 1991.
Dr. Robinson’s research interests are in applied climate, especially related to New Jersey, and in climate dynamics and change, particularly focused on global snow cover. He is a member of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize sharing intergovernmental panel on climate change, having co-authored the snow section of the cryosphere chapter within the science assessment volume. He currently chairs a national research council panel, sits on the American Meteorological Society’s applied climatology committee, is a member of the lead climate advisory committee for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and has recently joined Liberty Science Center’s learning and teaching advisory committee. He has chaired the American Meteorological Society’s Polar Meteorology and Oceanography Committee and was recently president of the American Association of State Climatologists.
Later this month, Dr. Robinson will receive an NOAA Environmental Hero award, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of American Geographer’s Climate Specialty Group.
