Quint recounts their travels to date: Everything has gone well so far and the kids have been awesome. They are positive, outgoing, adventurous, mature and fun. I’ve enjoyed being with them. We are all getting along and everything has gone more or less according to plan. Here’s a brief recap –
After two straight overnight flights, we were a bit tired on arrival in Nairobi, but we went out to two places that day. First, we visited an elephant orphanage – a charity that cares for elephants whose parents have been killed. We saw baboons and warthogs in the parking lot. Then we went to a giraffe center where we hand-fed giraffes; the giraffes would lick us with their long tongues – it was a unique experience.
The second day, we walked into Nairobi; we visited the site of the previous day’s bombing (not a big deal here) and went to the site of the 1998 Al-Qaeda bombing of the U.S embassy. Then, we went to the Kibera slum and visited a school…We had a chance to walk through the slum and experience firsthand some of the horrific living conditions people face there. Afterward we went north about two hours to Lake Naivasha where we spent the night looking in vain for the hippo (the one I apparently promised they would see).
The next day we rode bikes into Hell’s Gate National Park where we saw zebra, buffalo, baboons, gazelle, topi and lots of different birds. The following morning – and for the last three days – we went on safari to the Masai Mara. We were in two vans with detachable roofs and saw every animal possible. At the end of the safari, we were driven to Lake Victoria where we now are. Tomorrow, we go to Uganda.
