Blair Academy Players Open Season

The Blair Academy Players opened their theatrical season with Dracula on Halloween night, November 2 and 3, in the DuBois Theatre of Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts. The version presented is adapted by Crane Johnson from the novel by Bram Stoker.

Performing Arts Chairman Craig Evans, director of the production, said, “This classic horror story comes to life (or is it undeath?) as a Halloween treat for the Academy Players’ audience. Johnson’s new adaptation brings the focus to the events that transpired in London, where Lucy (played by junior Lotte Lijnzaad) has suddenly developed a strange malady, stumping her fiancé, Dr. Steward (played by senior Todd Lewis) and her aunt Mrs. Harker (played by senior Tina Tozzi). Meanwhile, Steward’s subject Renfield (played by senior Andrew Hutcheson) exhibits the bizarre behavior of eating flies and birds, and calling for a mysterious master. Maid Abigail (played by senior Olivia Trozze) warns the inhabitants that something is amiss, even when the renowned metaphysician, Dr. Van Helsing (here a female, played by senior Taylor McKay) begins to suspect the family’s neighbor, Count Dracula (played by senior Michael Richards). Thereafter it is a desperate race to save Lucy, and the others, and to drive a stake through Dracula’s schemes. Full of humor and horror, Dracula is sure to be bloody brilliant.”

The play is student directed by junior Katrina Hefele with faculty member Kaye Evans as assistant director. Technical director is faculty member Wayne Rasmussen, assisted by faculty member Michael Sayers. The technical crew consists of sophomore Freddy Knight, freshman Savannah Mourao and junior Matthew Ziff.
