The Blair Academy Players opened Guys
and Dolls on Valentine's Day, with two additional shows on
February 15 and 16 in the DuBois Theatre of Armstrong-Hipkins
Center for the Arts.
Craig Evans, director, explains: This beloved musical, with its book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling and music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, is set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City where some of Broadway’s most legendary characters are assembled: Sarah Brown (played by senior Tina Tozzi), the upright but uptight mission reformer who is trying to bring sinners to her local mission house; Sky Masterson (played by senior Dylan Evans), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide (played by senior Taylor McKay), the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by her 14-year engagement; and Nathan Detroit (played by senior Andrew Hutcheson), her devoted fiancé, gambling his love to keep alive his floating crap game; gambler Nicely Nicely Johnson (played by senior Todd Lewis), a gambler whose heart is as big as his voice; Benny Southwest (played by junior Michael Breslin), trying to bring Detroit’s crap game to fruition, and Arvide (played by senior Tyler Browse), Sarah’s uncle who tries to convince her to worry more about her heart than her soul. The production features some of Broadway’s best songs, including “Luck Be a Lady,” “Fugue for Tinhorns,” Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat,” “Bushel and a Peck,” “Take Back the Mink” and “Adelaide’s Lament.” Guys and Dolls is one of Broadway’s best.
Blair Academy is a proud participant in the Freddy Awards competition at the State Theatre in Easton, Pennsylvania, a program honoring area high school musicals. Last year Blair won Best Production by a Smaller School and Best Featured Ensemble Member for its production of Urinetown.
