2008-2009 Student Troupe Performs The Bald Soprano
The newly formed, student-run Grand Thespian Freedom Organization staged a performance of Eugene Ionesco’s play, The Bald Soprano: Anti Play, on February 12, 13 and 14.
The Bald Soprano, written in 1950, was Eugene Ionesco’s first show in English and was written while he was still in the process of learning the language. The play – a completely nonsensical comedy about the perception of reality and emotions – describes how nothing in life makes sense and shows that reality and meaning are entirely subjective. The completely ludicrous dialogues throughout the show portray a feeling of confusion and frustration while staying true to the underlying message: meaning is in the eyes of the beholder. It features Mr. and Mrs. Smith (played by junior Dan Kwartler and senior Katrina Hefele), Mr. and Mrs. Martin (played by senior Zach Flaugher and sophomore Ally Cianni), Mary the maid (played by junior Caitlin Campbell), and the Fire Chief (played by senior Eric Hedden). The show is directed and organized by seniors Matthew Ziff and Katrina Hefele.
Can you find the underlying plot? Is there one at all? Is this show really just a lot of absurd humor, or does it really have a deeper allusion to life itself? Here is your chance to see the Grand Thespian Freedom Organization perform a truly hysterical example of Absurdist Theater and to figure it out for yourself!
