The Blair boys’ basketball team raised over $2,000 this past weekend (Dec. 6-7) as a result of hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase, doubling the amount of funds raised during last year’s charity event. Participants in the tournament included The Hotchkiss School (Conn.), The Hun School (N.J.), and Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.). In their first game on Saturday night, the Bucs defeated a talented Hotchkiss team, while on Sunday, they were defeated by a strong and determined NMH team.
Proceeds from this showcase will benefit the Adam Frey Fund, which has been set up to aid wrestler Adam Frey ’05, who is battling cancer. Adam is a wrestler at Cornell University who was diagnosed with germ cell cancer after undergoing a routine CAT scan following a car accident in March 2008. As a college freshman, Frey was the #2 ranked wrestler in America and is a two-time NCAA Division I qualifier for Cornell. While at Blair, he was a junior national champion in 2005.
On Saturday – led by returning starters senior forward Austin Johnson, junior guard Hakeem Harris and junior guard Ryan Lubreski – Blair topped Hotchkiss 96-77. Other notable performers from the weekend included senior newcomer Nathan Healy (guard/forward),who sparked the Bucs with a number of timely shots. Although the Bucs lost the second game to NMH (undefeated over the weekend), they fought hard in the second half of the contest. Blair travels to Massachusetts this Saturday to play in the Worcester Academy Blackburn Tournament; they will follow that with a trip to Northfield Mount Hermon on Saturday, December 20.
