2008-2009 Pathos & Humor: Perfect Conclusion to Skeptics Series
Marc Elliot spoke on the topic, “Don’t Judge a Book by Its Noises,” as the Society of Skeptics series concluded for the school year. Elliot has dealt with Tourette’s syndrome and an intestinal disorder which have taught him many lessons about tolerance.
Much to the enjoyment of his audience, he asked them to role-play as though they, too, were afflicted with a tic common to sufferers of Tourette’s. Elliot peppered his presentation with humor and a wealth of anecdotes relating the difficulties – as one might imagine – of persuading others in a public setting to believe he is not intentionally insulting them as a result of his verbal tic. He noted that one time, he was actually kicked off the bus he traveled on, accused of purposely hurling racial slurs at the driver and a passenger.
Elliot’s program – with its delivery and comedic timing – was a fitting conclusion to a year’s worth of impressive Skeptics programs. Stay tuned for a new roster of fine speaker when the series commences once again this fall.
