Afghanistan Filmmaker Speaks at Skeptics
Joined by Shamila Kohestani ’08

On April 7, cinematographer Maria Ayubi was the featured Society of Skeptics speaker; her topic for the evening was “Women’s Rights in Afghanistan.” Ayubi, who is 26 years old and has always lived in Kabul, traveled to Herat and Bamiyan for Afghanistan Unveiled and has just completed co-directing Shadows.

Ayubi was joined by Shamila Kohestani ’08, who studied at Blair last year and is currently a student at Drew University. Shamila assisted with the English translation of Ayubi’s presentation. She was the captain of the Afghanistan national women’s soccer team; click on this link to read the on-line version of her story on The New York Times’ Web site: Soccer as an Escape to Hope for Afghan Teenager.
