Spirits Sparked for Peddie Day!
Saturday Photos Added
Since 1903, Blair Academy and The Peddie School have competed in football – a rivalry that constitutes New Jersey’s oldest continuous prep football competition. In addition to this gridiron contest on Peddie Day in November, the two schools vie for the coveted Kelley-Potter Cup by playing one another in a competition involving all types of fall sports (Click here to read about football’s success and view results of all the competitions).
During the week leading up to Peddie Day, frivolity abounds at Blair. The campus is bedecked with banners hanging from windows, often poking fun at the Peddie chicken mascot. Each day of the week, students dressed in “garb of the day,” including pajamas or other themes such as a particular decade of fashion (click here for photos). On Peddie Day “Eve,” a spirited pep rally, torch procession and bonfire paved the way for a day of athletic competition, tailgating and the return of alumni. In fact, archival files indicate that the first pep rally and bonfire lit the spirit and the skies of the Blair community in 1895. Check out the storied history of Peddie Day by clicking here.
As the 2008 festivities drew nearer, Headmaster Chan Hardwick emailed the School’s key leadership to apprise them of some of the latest fun and pranks: “Thought you would want to know that some fearless student or students hung a ‘Beat Peddie’ banner from the water tower last night, and the senior class released 1,000 crickets in Clinton Hall to liven up the week!”
