Veteran softball coach Carolyn
Conforti-Browse ’79 reports the following: “This July, both Blair softball
pitchers participated in several college showcases. Rising
senior Alexandra Magistro ’10, who pitches for the Easton
Valley Waves, performed in front of 80 coaches and hit 63 m.p.h.
on her fastball and curveball multiple times at showcases in
Pennsbury, Pa., Devens, Mass, and Binghamton N.Y. She was also
named MVP at one of her tournaments. Rising sophomore Michelle
Fox ’12, who plays for the NJ Rocks, was the most accomplished
in her age group at the Binghamton showcase, recording 60 m.p.h.
in front of 50 coaches. She also hit one over the fence. Of
course, both pitchers are indebted to their catchers, rising
juniors Kelsey Stevens ’11 and Ashley
Iannone ’11,
both of whom worked hard to make their aces look great.”
Three
Blair wrestlers competed in the 18th Maccabiah Games held
in Israel this summer. The games are seen by many worldwide
as the “Jewish Olympics.” It is an international
sports festival that takes place every four years and is third
largest sporting even in the world. Blair Academy had two alumni
and one current student represented on team USA. Zach
Hammond ’04 won bronze medals at 120kg
in both Freestyle and Greco. Max
Meltzer ’03 won a gold medal at 74kg
in Greco, bettering his 2005 silver medal performance at
66kg. Current Blair student Evan Silver ’11 won
gold medals in both Freestyle and Greco.
Head girls’ basketball coach Sue Altman reports the following: “Temi Fagbenle ’10 had a great summer traveling with her AAU basketball team all over the country and has gotten a lot of college attention from some big-time programs. She was even one of a handful of players featured on ESPN’s Web site after the U.S. Nationals in Washington, D.C.
