Ceramics Students Treated to Guest Artist

Willi Singleton, a potter who lives and works in the Hawk Mountain area of Pennsylvania, spent the day at Blair on Thursday lecturing and demonstrating for three of art teacher Kate Sykes’ ceramics classes. Kate noted, “Willi made connections for students and teachers between the inspiration he gets from nature and how these motifs are translated onto the surfaces of his pots. He told us about his interesting path as an American potter training in Japan, and then spent the rest of the class period demonstrating how to make a large vase form and a large bowl. Students were awed by his handling of the clay and learned a few new techniques that they were eager to try the next day in class.”

Willi is a American potter who makes his work using traditional Japanese methods (see photos below). From digging his clay, to burning bamboo, corn stalks and wood to use for his glazes, to firing his work in the woodfiring climbing kiln he built, Willi is a model for using mostly local materials and traditional methods.
