“The Skies Within” on Display

“The Skies Within,” an exhibition by New York artist Deirdre Swords, appears in the Romano Gallery of Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts now through December 5. Following a trip to Peru to hike the historic Inca Trail, Swords began a series of paintings of abstractions based on her reactions to the magnificent natural world she experienced in this ancient land. Influenced by the work of the Abstract Expressionists, as well as the work of contemporary artists Cy Twombly and Anselm Kiefer, this work – primarily oils on canvas – “employs luminosity and gesture to capture feelings of transcendence,” said Swords. Also included are sculptures completed prior to this painting series.
