Extending a Hand to Haiti
How to Help

Chaplain Cynthia Crowner and Kaye Evans, advisor to Blair’s community service organization, announced the following efforts to aid the earthquake victims of Haiti:

Community service will collect money, to be divided and sent to Church World Service, as well as Partners in Health (PIH), to help their relief efforts. PIH – which Blair students have regularly contributed to through their annual Read-a-Thon – has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years to bring modern medical care to poor communities in nine countries around the world. Based in Boston, PIH employs more than 11,000 people worldwide, including doctors, nurses and community health workers. To read the Boston Globe’s January 13 article about PIH, click here.

Church World Service is an interdenominational international aid agency to whom the Blair community has contributed in the past through the CROP Walk. During meals and in the dormitories, students will collect donations. Students may donate cash or charge donations larger than $5 to their Blair accounts. Faculty and staff who wish to contribute may give cash (either to the students collecting or to Kaye or Cynthia) or may write a check to CWS-Haiti Relief. The Church World Service Web site explains how funds are distributed – www.churchworldservice.org.

In addition, community service will put together hygiene and baby care kits to send to Church World Service to replenish their stock of items needed to help victims of disasters such as this earthquake. Anyone wishing to donate items for these kits may consider the following:

Baby Care Kit:
Six cloth diapers
Two T-shirts or undershirts (no “onesies”)
Two washcloths
Two gowns or sleepers
One sweater or sweatshirt
Two receiving blankets (one can be hand-knitted or crocheted)

Hygiene Kit:
One hand towel approximately 16" x 28"
One washcloth
One wide-tooth comb
One nail clipper (no metal files or emory boards)
One bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)
One toothbrush (in original wrapper)
Six bandaids

A box for these items will be placed in the school office; the students will be assembling these kit to send off as soon as we can get enough items to pack up. Thank-you in advance for your support.
