Players Present Leading Ladies
The Blair Academy Players presented Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig on November 5, 6, and 7 in the DuBois Theatre of Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts.
Playwright Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) has been a master of the farce for some time, and his latest offering brings two down-on-their-luck Shakespearean actors to York, Pa., to try to gain an inheritance by disguising themselves as the rightful heirs, two English women. The two actors were played by seniors Chris St. John and Fred Knight. When they arrived at their destination, they became romantically interested in the rich woman’s niece, Meg (played by senior Nathalie Tilley) and family friend Audrey (played by junior Emily Collins). Suspecting that the rich woman Florence (played by senior Tori Rulle) was being preyed upon was Meg’s fiancé Duncan (played by junior Cole Voynick). Completing the complications were Audrey’s boyfriend Butch (played by junior Eric Timken) and Florence’s doctor (played by junior Dan Cioffi). The production was student directed by senior Lauren Schneider.
Evans notes that Ludwig has always been interested in the comedy inherent in show business, and this play throws in cross-dressing English men and the romantic confusion seen in Shakespeare’s own comedies. An internationally acclaimed playwright, Ludwig has had a number of hits on Broadway, in London and throughout the world. He has won the coveted Laurence Olivier Award, London’s highest theatre honor, in addition to two Tony Award nominations and two Helen Hayes Awards. His work has been performed in over 30 countries in at least 20 languages.
