Old Wheels & Gears Keep Turning
Blair Academy’s community service group collected used, repairable bicycles and sewing machines on October 4. A donation of $10 (tax-deductible) for each was collected in order to defray the costs of processing, rebuilding, shipping and distributing these items to adults and children in such places as Nicaragua, Ghana, Moldova, Sierra Leone and Guatemala. The bikes benefit Pedals for Progress (PfP), which collects over 9,000 bicycles annually and transfers this material wealth to those in need. To date, more than 120,000 have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and the Pacific Islands. In these countries, the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to kids and poor working adults. These bikes provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting produce to market, or accessing health care and other services. Steady employment for adults is vital to the development and success of these economies. Visit the PfP Web site at www.p4p.org.
