Upperclassmen Learn Self-Defense Techniques

In addition to “arming” themselves with academic prowess, junior and senior girls learned the merits and techniques of protecting themselves, as Hard Target Defensive Systems brought its experts to campus on January 27. Dean of Faculty Rachel Stone set up the program sponsored by the Health Committee. According to a company spokesperson, “This self defense program is specifically intended for the college bound junior or senior girl, aiding the attendee in developing her own system of attack prevention. Based on taking a proactive approach to personal safety, we stress prevention through awareness and training. [Young women] will be a more difficult target for the prospective perpetrator of a violent or non-violent crime.”

He added, “Understanding criminals, their motivations, tactics and needs and how that relates to their own personal safety strategy is a key element to their own security. Human predators – like animal predators – prey on victims they sense are in some way weak or easy. Therefore, understanding the criminal profiling process becomes crucial for your defense, what you project is who you are to these criminals.” Hard Target Defensive Systems provided Blair students with a blend of proven hands-on techniques and preventative strategies to reduce the possibility that they ever have to use them.
