On January 22, Blair Trustees, squash players and community members gathered to dedicate three named squash courts and to thank the donors whose gifts helped to make the School’s top-notch squash center a reality. Honored at the dedication were Mr. and Mrs. John C. Bogle ’47, Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Schmeelk and Andrew Schmeelk ’04, and Mrs. Ralph N. Meerwarth ’50 and Ms. Tracy L. Meerwarth. The Blair Academy Class of 1942 was also recognized at the dedication for their early support of Blair’s squash program. Class members named “The Class of 1942 Court” in honor of their 50th reunion in 1992.
The Blair Academy squash center is located in Tracy Hall, a gift of Mrs. Meerwarth and her late husband, Ralph, which they named in honor of their daughter. With seven courts, it is a sought-after venue for matches and tournaments.
“Our squash program is flourishing, thanks to our great facilities,” said Jim Moore, Blair’s director of squash programs and head varsity coach. “Varsity, JV and thirds can all practice together, and as a result, the team’s depth has increased tremendously.” Headmaster Chan Hardwick noted that recreational use of the squash courts has increased as well. “Bogle, Meerwarth, Schmeelk and 1942 Courts are well-used, particularly during the winter months,” he said. “These donors have given a wonderful gift to the entire Blair community.”
