Math Madness Takes Hold!
Student Finishes 1st in Age Group

 
  Latta Browse, math department chairman, is pleased with his students’ recent success.

Mathematics department chairman Latta Browse is pleased to report on a number of achievements by Blair students during various math contests this winter. Most recently, Phil Kamtue competed in the 31st annual Lehigh University High School Math Contest on March 5, just as most student were leaving for spring vacation. He finished first in his age group, fifth overall out of 360 competitors.

On February 15, 33 students took part in the fifth round of the New Jersey Math League competition. Blair earned 28 out of a possible 30 points. Latta noted, “After four rounds, Blair was in fifth place in New Jersey; the latest score should help us stay in the top tier.”

The week after, on February 23, 12 students took the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) sponsored by the University of Nebraska. Annie An, Angelina Guan, Melody Shao, Kent Zhang, JangWon Lim, Phil Kamtue, Yeojin Park, Yuan Li, San Tripathi, Jaohn Kang, Haeyoon Chung and Nuoya Li tested their skills. Those in the top five percent will advance to the second round, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) on March 30.
