To Sea What They Could See

Science teacher Rob Merrifield reports on a recent adventure he took with four students, Graham Merrifield ’14, Sovann Stark ’14, Kris Patane ’13 and Ali Surdoval ’13, to the coast of Maine from June 13-17. Accompanying the group was Sue Stark, Sovann’s mother, who has done a great deal of kayaking in a variety of international locations. She and Rob snapped numerous photos along the way.

“After driving eight hours, we loaded our kayaks with food, water, clothing and camping gear and launched from Round Pond into Muscongus Bay. Each day we paddled a different section of the bay and utilized three different island campsites that are part of the Maine Island Trail Association. A typical day involved rising at dawn, preparing breakfast, packing all of our gear into our boats, paddling to the next island, setting up camp, and exploring the island. Each student took a turn as navigator for the day while everyone pitched in to cook and clean up meals. Wildlife sightings included a bald eagle nest, numerous osprey, seals and dolphins. One afternoon we also collected fresh mussels that we steamed and added to a marinara sauce. Despite some cold, windy, rainy weather during the first two days, the students took it all in stride, then thoroughly enjoyed the next three days of gorgeous warm, sunny conditions.”
