Students Enjoy Summer Study in Spain

Foreign language department chair Timothy Devaney reports on a summer trip to Spain with Blair students: “We traveled to Spain this June to participate in home-stays and study Spanish in Cádiz, an ancient Andalusian coastal town with beautiful beaches. The city is replete with history dating back to the Phoenicians and including a 500-year Moorish reign. The Blair students, including – Carolyn Wan, Claire Ryder, Natalie Bacon, Elyse Pettaway, Ashley Zimmermann, Collin Browse, Dom Margiotta and Joe Park, stayed in the Old City whose narrow cobblestone streets offer cool shade in the otherwise oppressive Spanish sun. Cádiz hums with life all the time (taking a break for siesta of course), and Spanish children play in the plazas until late at night while families take in the night air and chat. The students integrated themselves into the life of the city, eating a late dinner with families and often meeting together for evening strolls, enjoying the current gelato trend in the city. On one weekend, a group of three students traveled to Madrid to sightsee, while the other five took day trips to Jerez (where they soaked in Moorish baths) and Arcos de la Frontera, one of the famous white hilltop towns of Andalucía. On the following weekend, the group went to Granada where they toured the dreamlike Alhambra and the Albayzín, or Moorish Quarter.”
