Blair and the Bard
Students Enjoy Production of Othello
On September 29, 110 Blair sophomores and faculty traveled to Madison, N.J., to see a production of Othello by The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. The trip was made possible through funding established in 2004 by Blair parent Dr. Alan Jeffrey, father of Aron Jeffrey ’94, to enhance and support the teaching of Shakespeare. These monies also fund the Edyth Jeffrey Shakespeare Prize, named in memory of Dr. Jeffrey’s mother and awarded annually to those Blair students who demonstrate the highest proficiency in Shakespearian studies. The entire sophomore class will be reading either Othello or Hamlet this year, and this production gave them the opportunity to test their understanding of the Bard’s language. The students delighted in the drama of the three-hour production, discussing the characters of Iago, Desdemona, Othello, and others during each of the two intermissions. Conversations continued on the bus ride back to Blair and are certain to enhance each student’s reading of Othello later in the year.
