Skeptics Welcomes Hudson Taylor ‘05 Speaking “On Tolerance”
Hudson Taylor ’05, founder and executive director of Athlete Ally, spoke at this week’s Society of Skeptics on October 11 in Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts. Hudson is a competing athlete and Division I college wrestling coach at Columbia University. He graduated from the University of Maryland as a Division I three-time All-American wrestler in 2010 and currently ranks among the top-fine pinners in NCAA history.
According to the website www.athleteally.com, Athlete Ally was created “as a resource to encourage athletes, coaches, parents, fans and other members of the sports community to respect all individuals involved in sports, regardless of perceived or actual sexual-orientation or gender identity or expression.” Athlete Ally functions as a sports resource “encouraging all individuals involved in sports to respect every member of their communities… and to lead others in doing the same.”
Hudson has recently been interviewed on MSNBC and was highlighted in a Buick Human Rights Highlight Reel. Hudson has been featured in various print media including The New York Times, Advocate Magazine, B magazine and the HRC Backstory. He has spoken at various colleges and universities including Texas A&M, Bates College, Columbia and Rutgers.
All Skeptics programs are free and open to the public. The weekly series, which has been in continuous existence since 1977, is one of the premier high school lecture series in the country. The program was an outgrowth of the Blair International Society, begun in 1962, and has served as a forum for the discussion and debate of important national and international issues. Over the past 30-plus years, under the tutelage of Dr. Martin Miller, the series has featured a wide variety of speakers who are engaging, accomplished in their respective fields and often controversial.
