Family Dedicates Seating Area in Memory of Ruth H. and John H. Van Kirk ’42

On September 17, three generations of the Van Kirk family gathered with members of the Blair community to dedicate a beautifully landscaped seating area in loving memory of Ruth H. and John H. Van Kirk ’42. “John was the very definition of a loyal alumnus,” said Headmaster Chan Hardwick, “establishing not only a family legacy at Blair, but also a legacy of service and giving that has now been carried on by his children.”

The seating area is a gift of the five Van Kirk siblings: John R. Van Kirk ’70, James Van Kirk ’73, Meredith Janssen, Sandra Olex and Kathryn Wolff. Adjacent to West Hall, it overlooks the sweeping lawns and paths of the pedestrian campus and has become a popular meeting spot for Blair students and faculty.

John H. Van Kirk was a devoted member of the Class of 1942, a Trustee from 1989-95 and a generous supporter of the School. Five of his grandchildren attended Blair—Che de Bruin ’93, Joshua Van Kirk ’95, Rebecca Gruber ’97, Samantha Sintros ’99 and Carly Gale ’06—and all were present for the dedication.

John R. Van Kirk noted that Blair was an important part of his father’s life. “Not only did he want to preserve Blair, he wanted to share it with others,” he said. “It is our hope that the students and faculty, family and guests who pause [at this seating area] to enjoy the view, reflect on life, discuss the secrets of the universe or simply catch their breath will somehow understand that this man loved Blair.”
