Parent Newsletter: April 2006

SPRING GREETINGS TO BLAIR PARENTS AND FAMILIES,
Yes, it is spring, even though snow and rain flew wildly through campus last week. Finally the weather is warmer and students are happy to have replaced their winter coats with shorts and sandals. Please take a moment to read the items listed below by clicking on the link that interests you most. As always, I appreciate your input and welcome questions.

STUDENT FROM THE PEDDIE SCHOOL PASSES AWAY
Everyone here at Blair shares in the loss of Rob Seraydarian ’08 from The Peddie School, who passed away on April 1 from complications from a brain aneurysm. He was hospitalized on February 3 and soon after went into a coma. He was remembered at a private memorial service at Peddie last week. Another service will take place in his hometown of Richboro, PA, at a later date.

SKEPTICS SERIES
Dith Pran, whose wartime life was portrayed in the award-winning movie, The Killing Fields, is the featured Society of Skeptics speaker on Tuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in the Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts. His topic for the evening is “The Khmer Rouge and the Cambodian Holocaust.” http://www1.blair.edu/News_Events/2005_2006/news_ev_pran.shtm

EASTER BREAK
This week will be a short one, with a half-day schedule on Friday and no classes on Saturday and Monday. There are a number of students who are unable to go home for the holiday weekend, so please consider inviting one or a few to your home for the holidays. I’m sure they would love to share a meal with you and your family.

JUNIOR PARENTS
Jess Bradley from ConnectEdu.net will be speaking to the junior class on April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in DuBois Theatre. She will familiarize students with this Web-based program to help them with their college search. Your son or daughter should have already received login information via e-mail. For further information, click on http://www.connectedu.net/solutions_highschool.html

SAT
The junior class will take the SAT exam on May 6. Students need to report to the “big gym” by 8:00 a.m.

SUMMER PROGRAM
Operation Wallacea (Opwall) is a UK-based organization that coordinates a series of biological and social science expedition projects designed to underpin the achievement of specific wildlife conservation aims. The expeditions are now operating in five countries: Indonesia, Honduras, Egypt, Cuba and South Africa.

Students work side-by-side with Ph.D. scientists and graduate students on current research projects, collecting a particular type of data relevant to that particular study. They may be counting birds in the jungles of Indonesia, determining the population of boa constrictors in Honduras, or diving in Ras Mohamed National Park, which offers arguably some of the best diving in the world.  More information on this program can be found at http://www.opwall.com. Blair has four student spots reserved for the Honduras program for the summer of 2007.

There will be an information session with Opwall leaders on Thursday, May 4, at 7:15 p.m. in Cowan Auditorium. Contact Rod Gerdsen if you have any questions at gerdsr@blair.edu or 908-362-6121 x 5696.

JUNIOR & SENIOR PROM
This year’s prom will be held at Perona Farms in Andover, N.J. on May 23.

SAVE THE DATE
Blair’s fall Parents’ Weekend is scheduled for October 27 and 28. http://www.blair.edu/Parents/par_par_weekend.shtm

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT REVISIT DAYS
Blair held its first revisit days on April 3 and 7. A huge thank-you goes out to all the parents who were on hand to meet and greet prospective students and their families. While students were visiting classes, parents had the opportunity to ask Blair parents questions that they normally wouldn’t ask at an interview, such as, “How do I know if my son is eating well?”
