Parent News & Events

Dear Blair Parents,
As April has turned to May, we find ourselves awash in the colors of spring and busy as ever trying to keep up with the exciting lives of your children. It is ever the case that the prettiest time of year inevitably turns out to be the busiest as well. Underclass students are hard at work preparing for exams while seniors are completing projects and working to wrap up their Blair careers in productive fashion. Teams are moving into the home stretch of their seasons, providing excitement and fun for players and spectators alike. (Five senior boys anointed themselves the pep band for varsity softball yesterday, with their own rendition of a Buccaneer Fanfare. The response from parents visiting from Hun was that they were hands down the worst sounding and most positively spirited fans they had encountered all year. Our boys took that as a compliment!). The prom and graduation are just around the corner, and there is the bittersweet mixture of looking forward to summer vacation, while also becoming increasingly aware that our time together as the 2007-2008 Blair community is fleeting.
Amidst all of this, the arts at Blair are alive and thriving. Last week we enjoyed three performances of Proof starring four of our most accomplished senior actors, as well as a Jazz Band/Wind Symphony recital, and this week features performances of Metamorphoses in the Wean Studio Theatre on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights (7:30 p.m.) and the spring Singers/Wind Ensemble concert on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. The spring Student Art Exhibition opened last week displaying an array of talent that never fails to impress (the show will remain in the Romano Art Gallery and the Rotunda of Armstrong-Hipkins through the end of the year … please take time to stroll through it when you are on campus). On Tuesday, May 13th, the always enjoyable finals of the senior public speaking competition will take place right after dinner, and on Thursday evening, May 15th, the dancers will present their spring concert (7:10 p.m.). The junior/senior prom and Graduation week follow (parents of seniors have received mailings about details). Whew …there is no such thing as a boring, uneventful week in May at Blair! (Please check the Web site for up-to-date times for concerts, etc.)
Some parents might have been confused by the fact that two calendars were sent out last spring/summer. The first (mailed in March) indicated that this coming weekend would be Spring Arts Weekend (our effort in recent years to consolidate performances on one weekend for the benefit of parents—but to the detriment of our performers and artists). The revised calendar (and the one on our Web site) that was sent in June reflected a change in plans to the model of spreading performances out over the month of May. So, if you are still working off that initial calendar, please know that there is not a designated Spring Arts Weekend this year, and this is not a closed, community weekend for underclass students.
It is always a pleasure to see parents on campus, and we hope that a number of you will be able to enjoy the various campus events between now and the end of the school year. Remember to check the web-site for details about events, including the most up-to-date times.
We trust that you are gearing up/resting up for the challenge that you have of taking on your children for the summer as we take a break!
Regards,
Dave Low
