Video Generated Prints and Video Installation by Dorota Bakalus

Dorota Bakalus was born in Poland and studied Architectural Design at Wroclaw College. She is a graduate of New York Institute of Photography.

Artist’s Statement
“Although I consider myself to be a photographer and my work photographic in nature, I am primarily concerned with attributes more traditional to drawing, painting and printmaking: the interaction of color, line and form. I have developed and refined the video print process as a way of synthetically reordering the structure of a photograph. I start by making a cinematographic sequence with a portable video camera and select individual frames — at a later time, thereby distancing the image selection process from the moment of exposure. Once a particular picture is selected, I arrange a video feedback loop with a monitor and a camera to manipulate the image. The image can be stripped of tonal differentiation, color tints can be introduced with filters and the tone scale reversed. Once a satisfactory image exists on the monitor screen, it is broken down into a series of individual prints which are then reassembled as a mosaic type composite on the final paper support. All of my pictures are made with various kinds of thermal dye sublimation printers. Some of these printers permit printing on materials other than the intended receiver sheets. I carefully collect catalog and magazine pages for later overprinting with my own pictures. Working with found materials in this way introduces an element of unpredictability that I find exciting.”
