“Miss Ellen’s Bookstore” at Blair Academy sells apparel, gifts and sportswear. The store’s inventory is also available online.
Why is it named “Mrs. Ellen’s Bookstore?” Because in 1908, when she was 17, Ellen Belet was hired at Blair Academy as the bookkeeper of the school laundry for 10 cents an hour. Her 10 hour days consisted of doing the books and ironing petticoats for the girls. When the laundry closed in 1954, Miss Ellen was promoted to manager of the bookstore, soon named “Miss Ellen’s Bookstore.” She endeared herself to generations of students over her 73 years of service to Blair Academy, which ended in 1981.
The store is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. when class is in session.
