Parent Volunteer Group

Volunteering is a great way to get involved and help with various activities and events throughout the year, as well as connect and build relationships with other Blair parents and families. I invite and encourage all of you to join the 2017-2018 Parent Volunteer Group (PVG).

To learn more about volunteering and getting involved at Blair, please join us for a luncheon at Blair on Friday, September 1, at 11:30 a.m. (immediately following pre-season registration) in the Wean Room of Romano Dining Hall. All are welcome.

Information regarding registering to be a PVG member will be emailed to all parents.

Feel free to contact Susan Long at or Kristine Scialla at with any questions you may have regarding volunteering opportunities. We look forward to getting to know you in the upcoming year.

Summer Reading and Language Assignments

Students are required to complete summer assignments for certain classes. Requirements vary by grade and class. Click here for the summer reading list and click here to access language assignments as well as other information for students.

Textbooks and School Supplies

Students will receive a preliminary copy of their course listings by Friday, August 11 to use as a guide for ordering textbooks. Textbooks can be ordered through Follett from the Blair website beginning Tuesday, August 15. Click here to register, as well as sign up for email notifications regarding the beginning of textbook sales.

Students should plan to bring basic supplies that are commonly needed, such as pens, highlighters, scissors, tape and paperclips. Students may select basic supplies that they prefer for most classes (i.e. choose between using a binder versus a spiral notebook). Teachers who require specific materials will give students ample time to obtain any additional supplies that will be needed at the beginning of the year. The School Store stocks all classroom supplies that are commonly needed.

What to Bring and Area Information

For a suggested packing list, including the clothing and room furnishings your child should bring to campus, click here. Remember, it often makes sense to wait until you arrive on campus, meet your roommate and see your room before bringing too many belongings. Also, for information about local shopping and dining, click here and to view a list of area accommodations, click here.

J. Brooks Hoffman '36 Health Center

The J. Brooks Hoffman '36 Health Center is open seven days a week, while school is in session, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. After the center closes, a nurse is available on-call until it reopens each morning. Run by a staff of registered nurses who provide emergency and ongoing care for illnesses and accidents under the direction of our school physicians, the health center also provides health education and counseling. The local hospital in Newton provides specialized care when needed. For more information on the health center, click here. For important information regarding impact testing, our pharmacy account and other health center frequently asked questions, click here.

Personal Counseling and Psychological Services

Lisa Acker, our director of counseling, is available to all students for individual counseling. Ms. Acker works with students to address the stressors of adolescence that might interfere with daily life. Students may drop in or schedule an appointment to see her during the academic day. A student can schedule an appointment with Ms. Acker by email, phone or stopping by her office located on the third floor of Clinton Hall. To contact Ms. Acker directly, call (908) 362-6121, ext. 5609, or email If you are interested in arranging an appointment for your child with one of the school's consulting psychologists, please contact Ms. Acker or Director of Health Services Peggy Fleck at (908) 362-6121, ext. 5672, or email

Spiritual Life

Blair was founded by local Presbyterian elders in the spring of 1848. While continuing to respect the Judeo-Christian values of our founding, Blair now embraces a wider, more inclusive view of religious life and is a member of the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education.

The School promotes various avenues–some traditional, some not–to instill in students the importance of strong character and values, as well as understanding and tolerance of others. To read about spiritual life at Blair, click here. For additional information, contact School chaplain Lisa Durkee at (908) 362-6121, ext. 5687, or email

Answers to some commonly asked questions can be found by clicking here. To determine the appropriate person or department at Blair to contact with questions, please visit the Whom Do I Contact? page in the "parent" section of Blair's website. You may also contact Susan Long or Associate Head of School, Ryan Pagotto; either of them will be able to answer your questions or direct you to the right department.
